A General Contractor (GC) coordinates all aspects of a renovation or build, from start to finish. They can be a company or person, but they are the primary point of communication between the homeowner and builders, contractors, subcontractors, etc. They are the one solely responsible for ensuring that your project stays on budget and gets completed to standard.
A General Contractor also:
Makes sure the building complies with all laws, codes and regulations
Is responsible for obtaining all needed permits and approvals
Is responsible for managing changes orders and dealing with changes/surprised that arise after work has commenced

Is responsible for scheduling all inspections

Shows you where quality can be invested in, and areas where more economical solutions can be chosen
Is knowledgeable of all the subcontracted trades involved and ensures they complete their work correctly and to standard
Resolves any potential conflicts on the job site
Helps you pick out appliances and/or sourcing
Is responsible for the condition of the job site
